Ulster Assessments - FAQ
Welcome to the FAQ page for Ulster Assessments, a private and professional SpLD diagnostic assessment service based in Limavady, County Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland. We provide full diagnostic assessments for dyslexia, dyspraxia/DCD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and ADHD as an SpLD. On this FAQ page you will find answers to common questions about our services. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to send us a message via our contact form.
Do you assess for Dyslexia?
Yes, we can assess children or adults for dyslexia.
Do you assess for Dyscalculia?
Yes - we can assess children or adults for dyscalculia. Dyscalculia is when an individual has a specific and persistent difficulty in mathematics, where numerical magnitude processing difficulties are persistent and significant.
Do you assess for Dysgraphia?
Yes - we can assess children or adults for dysgraphia. 'Dysgraphia' is a term that can be used to describe those individuals who, despite exposure to adequate instruction, demonstrate writing ability that is not commensurate with their cognitive level and age (Chung et al., 2020, p.1).
Do you assess for Dyspraxia/DCD?
Yes - we can assess those aged 16 and over for dyspraxia/DCD. Before seeking an assessment for dyspraxia/DCD, it is vital that you have ensured that alternative explanations for your motor difficulties have been ruled out by a doctor. Nothing is more important than your health.
Do you assess for ADHD?
We can carry out an assessment to identify 'characteristics of ADHD as a specific learning difficulty' for adults aged 18+. This is not a medical diagnosis and is primarily for the purposes of enabling an adult to qualify for support at college, university and/or within the workplace. It does not enable an adult to access prescription medication.
How long is your waiting list?
It depends upon the time of year. We work hard to keep waiting times down through seven-day and evening appointment availability. In addition, our 'turnaround' for diagnostic assessment reports is 5-7 days, rather than the industry standard of 2-3 weeks. Together, this ensures prompt access to our diagnostic assessment services.
Can I use the report that you give me, to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance?
Yes – as assessments are carried out by a SASC-registered Specialist SpLD Assessor holding a valid Assessment Practising Certificate. Just complete an application form for the Disabled Students’ Allowance and send your report off with it.
Can I use the report that you give me to seek support in the Workplace?
Yes - in light of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 an employer/workplace should make "reasonable adjustments" in light of an employee’s difficulties. Within the diagnostic assessment report itself, there is a ‘Recommendations’ section that you can provide to your employer for perusal. You will also be entitled to seek help from the Access to Work (NI) scheme.
How do I book an assessment?
Simply send us a message using the contact form on our site, stating what you would like an assessment for and your age or the age of the person that you're looking to book an assessment for. We will then be in touch to arrange a date and time that is convenient for you. We work hard to keep waiting times to a minimum.
How much does an assessment cost?
£580 - payment can be made via cash, bank transfer, PayPal or Revolut. Euros are also welcome at the current exchange rate.
How long does an assessment normally take?
Approximately two hours but rest assured, breaks can be taken.
How long after an assessment will I receive my report?
You will receive your diagnostic assessment report within one week. All assessments are carried out and reports written by a SASC-registered Specialist SpLD Assessor with an Assessment Practising Certificate. This means that they are accepted by schools, colleges, training providers, universities, SEAG, DSA/SFNI, DfC, and Access to Work (NI).
