Ulster Assessments - FAQ

Welcome to the FAQ page for Ulster Assessments, a professional dyslexia and ADHD assessment service based in Limavady, County Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Here you'll find answers to common questions about our services. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to send us a message via our contact form.

Do you assess for dyslexia?

Yes, we assess those aged 8 and over for dyslexia.

Do you assess for ADHD?

Yes, but only adults (minimum age 18). For an adult who feels that they have ADHD, a full diagnostic assessment has to be undertaken (this is in line with SASC regulations). The reason for this is that ADHD will commonly co-exist with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) and so it may well turn out to be the case that in addition to the identification of characteristic features of of ADHD, an SpLD such as dyslexia turns out to also be present.

Please note that the type of ADHD assessment that Ulster Assessments carries out does not enable access to ADHD medication. Access to ADHD medication can only be gained via a medical diagnosis which you can explore via your own GP - we supply a referral letter which you can use.

However, rest assured that the type of ADHD assessment that Ulster Assessments carries out should enable access to government-funded support such as the Disabled Students' Allowance or the Access to Work (NI) scheme as well as reasonable adjustments from your employer or college/university. Specific information on the type of ADHD assessment that Ulster Assessments carries out can be found here.

Your diagnostic assessment report will be authored by a fully qualified Specialist Assessor who has completed the required training on ADHD and who holds a valid Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) and full registration with SASC and the British Psychological Society.

How much does an assessment cost?

£550 for Dyslexia; £650 for ADHD. Payment must be made prior to the assessment (on the day is fine) and via either cash, bank transfer, PayPal or Revolut.

Do you assess clients from the Republic of Ireland?

Yes, of course - we are conveniently located 25 minutes from the Donegal border.

Can I use the report that you give me, to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance?

Yes – as our Specialist Assessors are accredited by SASC.  Just complete an application form for the Disabled Students’ Allowance and send your report off with it.

Can I use the report that you give me to seek support in the Workplace?

Yes - dyslexia can be classified as a disability under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and an employer/workplace should thus make "reasonable adjustments" in light of an employee’s dyslexic difficulties.

Within the diagnostic assessment report itself, there is actually a specific ‘Recommendations’ section that you can provide to your employer for perusal. You may also wish to seek assistance through the Access to Work (NI) scheme; more information on the Access to Work (NI) scheme can be found here.

How long after an assessment will I receive my report?

You will receive your diagnostic assessment report (20+ pages) within two weeks.
